Today it was announced on the news that TV Land will no longer be airing the Dukes of Hazzard because of the Confederate flag on the car. Really?! Is there a problem with the car being racist? Has it intentionally run down people of differnet colors? No where in the show has there been a burning cross, a KKK meeting, or talk of southern supremecy and succession from the Union. So do we really need to punish the car for the over-reaction of a few people? Will TV Land pull Hogen's Heros next for portraying German Nazis as bungling idiots? Will it pull I Dream of Jeanie because she's a blonde Westerner rather than the traditional Middle Easterner?
Where does it stop? What will my daughters' text books say about our history? And who will be the next race we try to recompense for our past mistakes? Wait, who's the "we" anymore? It seems that if you're white, you should feel bad for the history your ancestors have inflicted upon the human race.
The Confederate flag is jsut a flag. It represents a history that should be remembered so we don't repeat it. It does not promote hate, bigotry, or racism. People promote that. Upbringing promotes that. So, instead of removing something that reminds us of how far we've come, why not remove those who are creating the animosity to begin with?
