I saw a post on FaceBook about a 3 year old who killed himself with a gun he found in the home. The article also referenced another incident where a toddler found his dad's gun in the closet and killed himself. Accidents in both cases. Also in both cases the guns involved were loaded and, aparently, had a round in the chamber. Rule #1 of gun safety: treat every weapon as if it were loaded. The other important rule is when putting the gun in a safe condition, make sure the chamber is empty! It's not enough to take out the magazine, the chamber must also be empty. It only takes one shot, and sometimes it's a fatal shot. Our 6 year has been taught to keep away from the guns we have (which are locked in a safe, and each chamber is empty). She also ahs been through gun safety at school (I jumped at the opportunity to send her to it). Even if she sees a picture of a gun, or a toy gun, she goes into her safety routine. Stop, don't touch, leave the area, tell an adult. What gets me, is these adults in both cases seem to be knowledgeable in gun-ownership. That said, they should have known better than to leave a round in the chamber. Do I think the parents should be charged? No, I don't. It was a stupid accident. Someone forgot to leave the gun in safe mode, or thought "I'll do it later" but later was too late. They will have to live without their beautiful baby boy. I think that's punishment enough.
